Move Beyond the Selfie: Portrait Photography PBL Project

Artists have been taking selfies since the dawn of photography. Cameras allowed people to capture their own image in a way that had never been possible in all of human history, and today most of us carry a magical cell phone camera in a pocket, taking self portraits everywhere we go. Today, a photography student has to move beyond creating selfie portraits to capturing great outdoor and studio portraits of others in order to be a successful photographer. Lesson 1: Introduces the “selfie” as a form of portraiture that youth practice almost daily. Lesson 2: Develops students photographic skills and move on to take pictures of others. Lesson 3: Develops students portrait skills by using studio lighting. Lesson 4: Students will create a photograph portfolio. This project is brought to you by Bruce Erickson (CTE) with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by the Course Team Lead Gayle Nicholls-Ali.
