Creating an Underwater Robot - An Instruction Guide STEM Integrated Project
Did you know that there are robots specifically created for completing tasks underwater?
Called "Underwater ROVs" (remotely operated vehicles), they are becoming increasingly important for use in research, search and recovery, and completing tasks that are difficult for humans.
This project gives students the opportunity to go through the engineering design process and build an ROV frame using PVC pipe! It also explores the creating of an instruction guide for making an ROV through lessons in Digital Production, English and ESL.
Integrated Science: Exploring an Electrical Engineer at Work
These lessons will provide the fundamental science content in electricity and engineering for students to be able to create and build a complex electrical machine (AKA a robot!). This unit will include students exploring electricity basics, building circuits, applying the wired circuits to an electrical machine and building the machine that will be powered. Photographs will be taken during each step of the engineering process for technical write ups.
AME: Exploring the Digital Artist at Work
The Digital Production Artist’s job is in planning, producing and editing digital assets (photos and written copy) to produce a technical manual for print and the web. In this case, it will be a manual that documents the process for students to follow for creating this complex electrical machine so that it can be replicated independently by another individual or team. This unit will include career exploration, color matching, prepping photos for print with CMYK/RGB, outputting typography correctly and producing the printed manual with the correct resolution.
ESL: These lessons provide scaffolding and language support for students who do not identify English as their primary language. These lessons will help students become comfortable with the technical language needed to write instruction manuals and read nonfiction texts associated with the English and Science lessons. Additional lessons will also help students understand and use software programs such as the Adobe and Google suite.
English: Become a Technical Writer
These lessons will provide the basics of reading nonfiction (particularly technical writing) and writing their own manuals. The students will be learning to generally read for information and write in a clear and concise manner; but more specifically, they’ll be writing manuals that other students can understand and actually use correctly.
This unit is brought to you by Liz Moore (CTE), Mike Godsey (ELA), Kelly Thornton (Science) and Ryan Mammarella (ELD) with support from the CTE Online curriculum leadership team and detailed coordination provided by the Course Team Lead Mina Greas.
