Lifting a Vehicle Using a Two-post, Frame-engaging Lift

The linked CTE Transportation lessons in this project will explore the use of a two-post, frame-engaging vehicle lift.

  • In Lesson 1, students will demonstrate understanding of vehicle lift points and of uni-body versus body-on-frame vehicle designs.
  • In Lesson 2, students will consistently identify the operations that raise and lower the lift, and how to disengage the load hold devices (AKA latches; locks).
  • In Lesson 3, students will demonstrate the heightened awareness and agency that all lift operators must have.
  • In Lesson 4, students will string together the foundational skills they achieved in lessons 1-3 into one, summative task by demonstrating competency in safely and efficiently using a two-post, frame-engaging lift to spot, "rack", raise and lower a vehicle. Also, in Lesson 4, students will reflect on their skill development by completing a written self-evaluation of their vehicle lifting skills.

This project leads into lessons on completing underbody inspections and the diagnosis and service of the following systems: steering, suspension, brakes, exhaust and emissions. At least one, two-post, frame-engaging vehicle lift is essential to completing these lessons.

Before completing this project, students should complete a comprehensive shop safety unit that includes electrical safety, lock-out/tag-out, avoiding slips and falls, lifting equipment, fire prevention, PPE, etc. It should include a hands-on portion with tours and mastery of the shop layout and exit routes, and an academic portion similar to what is available on www.sp2.org.
