Newton's Cool in the Pool
Exploring Space Through Math applies exponential and logarithmic functions to analyze the temperature gradient in one of the largest indoor pools in the world, NASA's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory. The pool holds over 6 million gallons of water at an average temperature of 86 F to minimize the potential effects of hypothermia on astronauts and divers. Students analyze the temperature change in the pool after a power outage using Newton's law of cooling.
