How to Read Poetry

Poetry is a creative form of verbal expression.  Recitation will aid students in the comprehension of the literal and figurative meanings in the composition of each poem.  Lead in the class in analysis to help the students engage in open-ended interpretations of the poems.

Please consider the following interpretations of the poem:

  • Poems should be read in lines or stanzas
  • Poems must be read numerous times to gain meaning and understanding
  • Readings a poem out loud with feeling and voice inflection will help understanding
  • Poems are open to interpretation and do not have one right answer
